STRUCTURE AND LOCATION
● Each Thoracic Nerve arises from below the respective Thoracic Vertebrae and are named as T1-T12.
● Thoracic Nerves have a sensory (posterior) and motor (anterior root) as rest of the Spinal Nerves.
● Roots join to form trunk and from there an Anterior Division and a Posterior Division arise.
-
Anterior Divisions : First eleven T1-T11 thoracic nerves form Intercostal Nerves through their anterior divisions. They run between the ribs hence named so. The anterior branch of twelfth thoracic nerve forms Subcostal Nerve on each side as it runs below the twelfth rib.
-
Posterior Divisions : They further divide into medial and lateral branches. Medial branches of upper six Posterior Divisions also form Medial Cutaneous Ramus. Lower six Medial branches from Posterior Cutaneous Ramus.
FUNCTION
- Anterior Divisions supply skin on front of Thorax and Abdomen. They also supply on lateral side.
- Anterior Divisions supply intercostal muscles and other muscles of thorax.
- Posterior Divisions supply the skin of back via Medial and Posterior Cutaneous Ramus.
- Posterior Divisions supply muscles of back like Longissimus Dorsi, Multifidus, Trapezius etc.
