Nucleus Pulposus
STRUCTURE
- Nucleus Pulposus is a remnant of Notochord.
- Nucleus Pulposus is a non compressible semi fluid mass with a gel like (mucoid) consistency.
- Nucleus Pulposus is made up of Water and Proteoglycan and scattered Collagen fibres. There are few Cartilage Cells too dispersed through it.
FUNCTION AND SIGNIFICANCE
- Nucleus Pulposus distributes hydraulic pressure during compressive forces (load lifting etc) equally in all directions.
- Nucleus Pulposus degenerates with age becoming more hard and cartilaginous with decreasing water and fluid like consistency.
- During rupture of Spinal Disc, Nucleus Pulposus may leak out and compress onto the Spinal Cord.
