Skeletal System of the Foot
The anatomy of the foot is complex because there are 26 bones in the foot which is designed to support the weight of the body and allow movements such as running, walking, and standing. The muscles that support the leg attach at the end of the tibia and fibula which are the leg bones joined to the ankle and the foot at the synovial hinge joint. The lateral malleolus is joined to the ankle by the anterior talofibular. The foot bones begin at the end of the tibia and fibula where the synovial hinge joint joins them.

The Tarsal/ankle bones make up the region of the tarsus or more commonly called the ankle.
The Calcaneus/heel bone is the largest of the tarsal or ankle bones. This bone is very important in the movement of the foot and the support of the body. There are other important structures within the Calcaneus such as the Achilles tendon tarsal sinus and the tuber calcanei.
The Talus bone is also known as the astragalus and is an irregular shaped bone of the tarsal or ankle bone. It is the second largest bone of the ankle and forms part of the ankle joint. The function of this bone is to allow motion of the foot and it transfers the body’s weight to the foot. It is divided into three regions called the head, neck and body.
The Cuboid bone is one of several bones found in the tarsal (ankle) region. The Cuboid is found in each foot and contributes 2 of the 206 bones found in the human skeleton. The function of it is to support the body’s weight, movement and lateral stability. It also forms many joints in the foot, such as the tarsometatarsal and the calcaneocuboid joints.
The Navicular bone is one of the tarsal bones of the ankle region and is found in each ankle. It also contributes two bones to the human skeleton even though it is a relatively small bone, it does help with movement and to support the body’s weight. It touches five other bones, the Cuneiform bones, the Talus and the Cuboid bone. It has an appearance that resembles a boat due to its concavity.
There are two Lateral Cuneiform bones that contribute to all 206 bones in the human body located in the tarsal/ankle region. These bones are each shaped like a wedge. Each one is located between the Intermediate Cuneiform and the Cuboid bones. It is like the other bones of the tarsal/ankle region that support the body’s weight and allow for movement. It is also known as the third cuneiform or external cuneiform.
The Intermediate Cuneiform is in the tarsal/ankle region is wedge shaped and known as the second cuneiform bone or the middle cuneiform bone. It plays a role in the motion and support of the body.
The Medial Cuneiform bone is known as the first cuneiform bone and is found in the tarsal/ankle region. It also helps with the motion and support of the body. It touches four other bones which are the intermediate cuneiform bone, the Navicular bone, and two metatarsal bones.
The Metatarsal bones consist of five metatarsal bones and make up ten bones in the human body. They are located between the tarsus and the phalanges (toes). It is important to help in motion, the support of the body, and to shape the foot.
The Phalanges consist of three sections which make up the bones of the toes. The proximal phalanges are found at the base of the toes, closest to the tarsus. These bones are longer rest and play an important role in the movement of the foot.
The Intermediate Phalanges are found between the proximal phalanges and the distal phalanges. There are four intermediate phalanges and the only toes that lacks having them is the big toe. Like the distal phalanges they play an important role in the motion of the foot.
The Distal phalanges are a series of bones at the tip of the foot following the intermediate phalanges. They consist of five bones and also play an important role in the motion of the foot. The big toe helps govern balance of the body. This concludes the study on the anatomy of the foot.
