To be more precise, they are one of the collateral digital branches of the dorsal metatarsal arteries in the foot.

Unlike the palmar digital arteries, the dorsal digital arteries are exhausted in the region of the middle phalanx and do not reach the distal digit.

The toes of foot are supplied (fresh blood) by these arteries.

SOME CLINICAL ASPECTS

The dorsal digital arteries of the foot are susceptible to the clogging or buildup of fat in the arteries that can lead to atherosclerosis. The clogging or buildup of fat in the dorsal digital arteries of the foot can cause a loss of circulation to the area of the toes in the feet, thus leading to death of the tissues of the foot.
