The external iliac artery originates from the division of the common iliac artery in front of the sacroiliac joint of the hip bone.
It starts at the sacroiliac joint and then travels downward along the medial border of the psoas major muscle (muscle of loin). It leaves the pelvic cavity from behind the inguinal ligament close to the pubic tubercle of hip bone. From here onwards it continues as the femoral artery.
There are three important branches of the external iliac artery: Inferior epigastric artery Deep circumflex iliac artery Femoral artery
