External Iliac Artery

ORIGIN

The external iliac artery originates from the division of the common iliac artery in front of the sacroiliac joint of the hip bone.

COURSE

It starts at the sacroiliac joint and then travels downward along the medial border of the psoas major muscle (muscle of loin). It leaves the pelvic cavity from behind the inguinal ligament close to the pubic tubercle of hip bone. From here onwards it continues as the femoral artery.

BRANCHES

There are three important branches of the external iliac artery:

  •  Inferior epigastric artery

  •  Deep circumflex iliac artery

  •  Femoral artery
