External iliac vein arises from the femoral vein at the lower margin of the inguinal ligament. From here it goes upwards. The external iliac vein terminates at the region where the internal iliac vein joins it to form the common iliac vein. The external iliac vein follows the same course as the external iliac artery, but taking the blood in the opposite direction. It continues upwards from the femoral vein, it crosses the pubic tubercle of the hip bone and then travels along the medial border of the psoas major muscle (muscle of loin) to end at the sacroiliac joint. An important vessel that drains into the external iliac vein is the inferior epigastric vein.
