Gluteus Medius Muscle
STRUCTURE AND POSITION
- Gluteus Medius is a thick, broad and radiating muscle.
- Posterior one third of the muscle is covered by the Gluteus Maximus and anterior portion by the Gluteal Aponeurosis.
ATTACHMENTS
- Origin : Fibres of Gluteus Medius arise from the Ilium between the Posterior and Anterior Gluteal Line. Some of it arises from the Gluteal Aponeurosis covering its outer surface.
- It runs downwards and laterally and fibres converge to form a tendon.
- Insertion : Gluteus Medius inserts into the lateral surface of the Greater Trochanter of the Femur Bone.
BLOOD SUPPLY
Gluteus Medius receives its blood supply from the Superior Gluteal, Inferior Gluteal and Internal Pudendal Arteries which arise from the Internal Iliac Artery. Its terminal portion is supplied by the Lateral Circumflex Femoral Artery.
NERVE SUPPLY
Gluteus Medius is innervated by the Superior Gluteal Nerve.
ACTION
- Gluteus Medius abducts the Hip Joint and is a powerful abductor.
- Gluteus Medius also medially rotates the Hip Joint.
