Mentalis Muscle
Mentalis muscle arises from the incisive fossa of the mandible and gets inserted into the skin of lower lip. It is one of the main muscles of the lower lip.
Mentalis derives it blood supply from the facial artery, a branch of external carotid artery.
It is innervated by the zygomatic branch of the facial nerve.
In addition to directly affecting the lower lip, it imparts its role in facial expressions too. The name mentalis is said to be resulting from its role in facial expressions. It causes the protrusion of the lower lip and elevation of the chin skin. By elevating chin skin, it causes wrinkling over skin of chin.
This small muscle usually does not cause any problem. The major clinical problem associated with mentalis is the geniospasm. This condition starts in the childhood and is said to be genetic in origin. The chin starts quivering rapidly and involuntarily in this disorder.
