Metacarpals Posterior

Anatomy of the First Metacarpal:

  • Shorter and stouter than the others.

  • Body is flattened and broad on its dorsal surface.

  • Does not have a ridge as on the others.

  • The base articulates with the greater multangular; it has no facets on sides, but a  tubercle for the insertion of the Abductor pollicis longus.

  • The head on its volar side has two articular eminences, one is larger, for the two sesamoid bones in the tendons of the Flexor pollicis brevis.

Anatomy of the Second Metacarpal Bone:

Anatomy Of the Third Metacarpal:

  • The body is a little shorter than the second.

  • The base has a pyramidal eminence , the styloid process, upward behind the capitate; immediately distal to this it attaches  to the Extensor carpi radialis brevis.

  • On either side is a facet for articulation with the second and fourth  metacarpals.

Anatomy of the Fourth Metacarpal:

  • The body is shorter and smaller than the third.

  • The base articulates on one side with the hamate and the other side with the capitate.

  • On the radial side are two facets for articulation with the third metacarpal and on the ulnar side a single facet articulates with the fifth metacarpal.

Anatomy of the Fifth Metacarpal:

The base presents one facet that articulates with the hamate and on the other radial side a facet articulates with the fourth metacarpal. On its ulnar side is a prominent tubercle for the insertion of a tendon of the Extensor carpi ulnaris.
