Middle Lobe
STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION
- Middle Lobe of the Lung is demarcated from superior and inferior lobes by Horizontal and Oblique fissures respectively.
- It is smallest lobe of the lung.
- It has some of anterior border and anterior part of the base of the Right Lung.
BLOOD SUPPLY AND LYMPHATICS
- Middle Lobe of the Lung gets its blood and nutrient supply via branches of right Bronchial artery.
- Middle Lobe of the Lung gets pulmonary blood supply by middle branch of right Pulmonary Artery and drains into Middle Pulmonary vein (branch of right superior pulmonary vein) .
- Middle Lobe of the Lung usually drains its lymph into Bronchopulmonary lymph nodes and some of it into Pulmonary lymph nodes.
FUNCTION
Middle Lobe of the Lung functions mainly to oxygenate the blood via pulmonary circulation as it passes through the alveoli. However it also has non respiratory functions as :
- Altering the pH of body
- Conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II
- Filtering of Blood Clots
- Filtering of gas bubbles in blood
- Help sound production by providing air
- Can act as shock absorbent for heart etc.
