Muscles of the Head and Neck Posterior
Posterior Muscles of the Head and Neck are modified for support and movement of the Head and Neck region. In the Neck they exist as Posterior Muscles of the Cervical Region. In the Head they include the Occipital region.

STRUCTURE
Muscles in the Posterior part of the Head include :
- Occipital Muscle (posterior part)
- Temporal Muscle is a lateral muscle of the Head but it spreads to the posterior region of Head beyond the Ear.
- In the same way Posterior Auricularis can also be considered a Posterior Muscle.
Muscles of the Posterior Cervical Compartment are further divided into Suboccipital Muscles and Occipital Triangle Muscles. Muscles of the Suboccipital Region are :
- Trapezius
- Rectus Capitis Posterior Major
- Rectus Capitis Posterior Minor
- Obliquus Capitis Inferior
- Obliquus Capitis Superior
- Rectus Capitis Anterior
- Rectus Capitis Lateralis
Muscles of the Occipital Triangle are :
- Splenius Capitis
- Levator Scapulae
- Scalenus Posterior
- Scalenus Medius
- Scalenus Anterior
Longus Capitis and Longus Colli are Prevertebral Muscles which are also included in posterior muscles of the Neck.
FUNCTION
- Posterior Muscles of the Head and Neck extend the neck backwards. They also laterally flex the head region.
- They also provide support to the Vertebral Column, Head and underlying important Viscera.
