Nasopharynx
LOCATION
Nasopharynx is present above the oropharynx. It reaches the upper surface of the soft palate below, starting at the base of the skull above.
STRUCTURE
Nasopharynx originates at the back of the nose and continues downwards as oropharynx. Its roof and the posterior wall are concave. It has a part of the sphenoid bone above. Adenoids (lymphoid masses) are present are present in the upper part of the roof.
FUNCTION
Nasopharynx works as a tube that allows the passage of air through the nose.
CLINICAL IMPORTANCE
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is a common cancer of the nasopharynx. It occurs to people of different ages (adults and children). It is more common in the people of East Asia and Africa, especially in males.
