Navicular
Os Naviculare is the Latin pronunciation for navicular bone. It is one of the tarsal bones found in the feet of human beings. The name is derived because of its resemblance to a small boat as of its strong concave proximal joint surface.
Scaphoid bone, which is one of the carpal bones of the wrist, is called hand navicular bone because of its resemblance to navicular bone of foot.

ANATOMICAL POSITION
In humans this bone is located on the medial side of the foot and it is attached proximally to talus, distally with three cuneiform bones of the foot and laterally with a cuboid bone.
EMBRYOLOGY
It is the last bone of foot to start its ossification. Its ossification starts till or after 2 years in females and 4 years in males.
MUSCLE ATTACHMENTS
The only muscle which is attached to the navicular bone is tibialis posterior. Its main portion is inserted on the tuberosity of navicular bone.
ACCESSORY NAVICULAR BONE
2 to 14% of general population possesses an accessory navicular bone. This is an abnormal bone of foot which is formed in front of the ankle to the inside of the foot. Its symptoms may include bunions and heel spurs. It can be surgically removed at any age without the risk of any bone damage.
