Orbicularis Oris Muscle
A muscle around our eyes, which lies underneath our skin, is the Orbicularis Oculi (Orbicularis palpebrarum). It is a disc-like, circular muscle of the eye which has the ability to close our eyes – a type of sphincter muscle. Its comprise of the following parts:
1. Orbital part is a reddish and thick muscle, which can be controlled (voluntary muscle). It closes the eyelids firmly.
2. Palpebral part is a pale and thin muscle which acts involuntarily. It closes the eyelids gently, such as when we sleep or blink.
3. Lacrimal part (Tensor tarsi) is a small, thin muscle located near the tear duct, which compresses the tear sac, collects tears from the ducts and transport it into the nasolacrimal duct. It helps in the flow of tears over the surface of the eye.
