STRUCTURE AND POSITION

•        Scrotum is actually an extension of Perineum which hangs below the root of Penis.
•        Scrotum is made up of skin and muscle tissue.
•        Dartos Fascia is a muscular fascia present beneath the skin of the Scrotum.
•        Pubic hair grow on Scrotum after puberty.
•        Testes, their pedicles and Spermatic Cord all reside inside the Scrotum.

BLOOD SUPPLY AND LYMPHATICS

•        Scrotum receives its arterial supply via Anterior Scrotal Arteries. Blood from it drains into Testicular Vein.
•        Lymph from the Scrotum is drained into the Superficial Inguinal Lymph nodes.

NERVE SUPPLY

Scrotum gets innervated via Posterior Scrotal Nerves, Anterior Scrotal Nerves, Genital branch of Genitofemoral Nerve, Perineal branch of Posterior Femoral Cutaneous Nerve.

FUNCTION AND SIGNIFICANCE

• Scrotum protects testes from body heat and compression. It provides temperature of around 35 degrees required for normal sperm production. It does so by the help of Dartos Muscle in scrotum and Cremaster Muscle in the abdomen. When temperature is low muscle contracts and pulls testes upwards to provide body heat. And when temperature increases both muscles relax allowing lowering of testes and gradual cool down.
• Scrotum may develop Sebaceous or Epidermal Cyst.
• Blister formation occurs on Scrotum by scratching in humid conditions.
• Contact Dermatitis (inflammation of skin by contact of foreign object) can occur because of soaps and detergents etc.
