Semispinalis Capitis Muscle is also known as Complexus Muscle. It is located at the upper and back part of the Neck. It lies deep to the Splenius Muscle and medial to Longissimus Cervicis and Capitis. Semispinalis Capitis Muscle is one of the Transversospinalis Muscles (group of Human Back muscles) of the human body. From the tips of Transverse Processes of the upper six or seven Thoracic and Seventh Cervical Vertebrae, the muscle originates by a series of tendons. Its tendon also originates from the Articular Processes of three Cervical Vertebrae, C4 C6. The muscle tendons unite and form a wide muscle which after coursing upward ends in between the superior and inferior Nuchal Lines (curved lines) of Occipital Bone. Its position is deep to the Trapezius Muscle and can be referred as a firm muscle mass placed lateral to the Cervical Spinous Processes.
Dorsal Rami of the Cervical Spinal Nerves gives nerve supply to Semispinalis Capitis Muscle.
The blood supply to Semispinalis Capitis Muscle is provided by the Deep Cervical Artery, which is the branch of Subclavian Artery of Costocervical Trunk. Descending branch of Occipital Artery also supply blood to the muscle.
The main function of Semispinalis Capitis Muscle is the extension of head i.e. rotation of head to the opposite side. It also helps in straightening of Neck and Head, and bending the Neck to side.
