STRUCTURE AND POSITION :
- Serratus Anterior Muscle is a saw like muscle with serrated (segmented) origin.
- It is located over the Ribs on lateral side of the Body.
- They constitute the outermost layer of Muscles on lateral side of the Ribs from which it arises.
ATTACHMENTS :
Serratus Anterior Muscle has a number of origins and a common insertion.
- Origin : Serratus Anterior Muscle arises from first 8 or 9 Ribs. It arises over the Anterolateral surface of the Ribs just anterior to the Mid Axillary Line.
- It runs laterally and backwards and superiorly. Its direction is oblique.
- Insertion : Serratus Anterior Muscle is inserted into the Scapula over its anterior surface of the Medial Margin.
BLOOD SUPPLY :
Serratus Anterior Muscle receives blood from Superior Thoracic Artery, Lateral Thoracic Artery and Thoracodorsal Artery.
NERVE SUPPLY :
Serratus Anterior Muscle is innervated by the Long Thoracic Nerve.
ACTION :
Serratus Anterior Muscle rotates the Glenoid Cavity of the Arm upwards which is necessary for the complete lifting of the arm.
It also abducts the Scapula.
