Thyrohyoid Muscle

ATTACHMENTS

  • Origin: Thyrohyoid arises from lamina of Thyroid Cartilage. Its origin is oblique line over the lamina.
  • Insertion: Thyrohyoid gets inserted into inferior border of the greater cornu of the hyoid bone and some of the adjacent part of body of hyoid bone.

BLOOD SUPPLY

Thyrohyoid muscle gets its blood supply from branches of :

  •    Superior Thyroid Artery
  •    Lingual Artery
  •    Inferior Thyroid Artery

NERVE SUPPLY

Thyrohyoid gets innervated by C1 through Hypoglossal Nerve.

ACTION

  • Thyrohyoid depresses the hyoid bone.
  • When Hyoid bone is fixed (by action of other muscles), Thyrohyoid lifts the Thyroid Cartilage and thus Thyroid Gland.
