Urethral Opening
STRUCTURE AND LOCATION
In males,
- Urethral Opening is usually located on the tip of Glans Penis.
- It is somewhat slit like in shape and can be rounded in some.
In females,
- Urethral Opening is present 2.5 cm behind the Glans of Clitoris inside Vulva.
- It is mostly round to oval.
- Openings of Skene’s glands lie on its both superolateral sides.
FUNCTION AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE
- Urethral Opening transmits urine out of the body during Urination.
- In males it also transmits Semen out during ejaculation.
- In males it can be abnormally positioned on Penis. It can be located either below its normal position (Hypospadias) or above the normal position (Epispadias).
- Abnormal shape can lead to Meatal Stenosis (constriction).
