Testicle Pain



Testicle pain is the pain in one or both testicles, ranging from mild to severe. The pain may have an origin in the testicle itself, or it can be the referred pain from the surrounding area like groin, scrotum and abdomen. It is a very important and key symptom of serious diseases involving abdomen and pelvic region.

CAUSES OF THE TESTICLE PAIN:

Following are the main diseases or syndromes that can trigger testicle pain:

  • Prostatitis

  • Mumps

  • Kidney stones

  • Torsion of testes

  • Orchitis

  • Epididymitis

  • Spermatocele

  • Testicular cancer

  • Varicocele

  • Trauma or injury to testes

  • Testicular tumors

SYMPTOMS OF THE TESTICLE PAIN

Symptoms of the testicle pain vary from being sudden and severe like in testicular torsion to being mild and gradual in nonbacterial chronic prostatitis. The main sign is pain associated with nausea, vomiting, chills, fever and bloody urine. The pain experienced in these cases is very severe and patient cannot even stand still.

DIAGNOSIS OF THE TESTICLE PAIN

In order to treat the testicle pain effectively, the underlying cause must be diagnosed. Patient’s history can provide a clue about the cause. General physical examination is performed on the patient to establish the location and grade of pain. However, the findings are confirmed by taking the lab tests. The diagnosis may include:

  • Blood tests

  • Urine tests

  • Imaging techniques like ultrasonography and CT scan

TREATMENT OF THE TESTICLE PAIN

The treatment options vary depending upon the cause of pain. In case of trauma, pain killers are given to abolish the pain and it generally heals on its own.

There is an immediate need for surgery in testicular torsion while antibodies can relieve the pain in case of inflammatory conditions like epididymitis, prostatitis and orchitis.

There may be a complete hernia causing a pain in testicles, surgical procedure is performed to correct that hernia.
