Buccinator Muscle
It originates from the outer surface of alveolar processes of bones, maxilla and mandible and from temporomandibular joint. Converge toward the angle of the mouth, where the central fibers intersect each other’s, those on above continue with the lower segment of orbicularis oris and those below with the upper segment to continue with the lip. It is supplied by the buccal artery. Motor part supplied by buccal branch of facial nerve. Sensory part supplied by buccal branch of mandibular nerve. It helps performing following functions Compresses cheeks against teeth and helps in blowing. Helps in suckling in neonates. Assists muscle in chewing. Aids in whistling and smiling.
