Common Iliac Artery

STRUCTURE AND POSITION

  • Common Iliac Artery is usually 4 cm long and more than 1 cm wide in a normal adult.
  • Common Iliac Artery begins at bifurcation of Abdominal Aorta and ends by giving of two branches on each side.
  • Common Iliac Artery starts anterior and just left to 4th Lumbar Vertebra.

RELATIONS

  •  Common Iliac Artery runs on each side downwards and laterally.
  •  Common Iliac Artery lies just medial to Psoas Muscles in its course.
  •  Each Common Iliac Artery divides in front of Sacroiliac Joint.
  •  Each of them is accompanied by Common Iliac vein posteriorly.
  •  Ureters cross them anteriorly at point of their bifurcation.

BRANCHES

Each Common Iliac Artery has 2 main branches at its termination.

Some other branches include:

  •   Muscular and tissues branches in ureter region supplying muscles and tissues around.
  •   Accessory branch to Renal Artery is also present.
