Humerus Appendicular

It is the bone of the upper arm. The smooth, dome-shaped head of the bone lies at an angle to the shaft and fits into a shallow socket of the scapula. It is located between the elbow joint and the shoulder. At the elbow it connects to form the elbow with the bones of the forearm, the ulna and radius bone. At the shoulder, the humerus bone connects with a rotational joint and this supports many of the arm’s functions.

The upper extremity has a rounded head joined to the body by a constricted portion called the neck, and two eminences, the greater and lesser tubercles. The tubercles are separated by a deepgroove, the intertubercular groove. The body or shaft is almost cylindrical in the upper portion half and spreads out and is flattened below, and has three borders and three surfaces. The anterior border runs from the front of the greater tubercle to the coronoid fossa below. The lateral border runs from the back part of the greater tubercle to the lateral epicondyle.
