Mandible is composed of two bones that are joined together at the symphysis (ridge) in the mid line. It has following parts: Body – it is the flat, horizontal part of the bone. Rami – these two parts start at the end of the body and are perpendicular to it. Alveolar process – it is the region that bears teeth. Condyle – it is the extension from the postero-superior part of the rami. It forms the temporomandibular joint with the temporal bone (a skull bone). Coronoid process – it is the antero-superior extension from the rami. A part of the temporalis muscle attaches to it.
Fracture of the mandible is common in facial injuries. It often involves the opposite half of the bone as well and is known as a ‘twin fracture’.
