Muscles of Arm and Hand

STRUCTURE :

Muscles of the Arm are divided into anterior and posterior compartments by a Fascial Membrane. Muscles of the Anterior Compartment are :

Muscles of the Posterior Compartment are :

Muscles of Forearm are divided into Flexor (anterior) and Extensor (posterior) compartment. Each compartment is then further subdivided into Superficial and Deep Layer. Flexor Compartment has following Muscles :

  •         Pronator Teres (superficial)
  •         Palmaris Longus (superficial)
  •         Flexor Carpi Radialis (superficial)
  •         Flexor Carpi Ulnaris (superficial)
  •         Flexor Digitorum Superficialis (superficial)
  •         Pronator Quadratus (deep)
  •         Flexor Digitorum Profundus (deep)
  •         Flexor Pollicis Longus (deep)

Posterior Compartment Muscles of the Forearm are :

  •         Brachioradialis (superficial)
  •         Extensor Carpi Longus (superficial)
  •         Extensor Carpi Bravis (superficial)
  •         Extensor Digitorum (superficial)
  •         Extensor Digiti Minimi (superficial)
  •         Extensor Carpi Ulnaris (superficial)
  •         Supinator (deep)
  •         Abductor Pollicis Longus (deep)
  •         Extensor Pollicis Longus (deep)
  •         Extensor Pollicis Brevis (deep)
  •         Extensor Indicis (deep)

Muscles of the Hand are divided into medial, lateral and intermediate parts. Medial Volar Muscles are :

  •         Opponens Digiti Minimi (hypothenar eminence)
  •         Abductor Digiti Minimi (hypothenar eminence)
  •         Flexor Digiti Minimi Brevis (hypothenar eminence)
  •         Palmaris Brevis

Lateral Volar Muscles are :

  •         Opponens Pollicis (thenar eminence)
  •         Abductor Pollicis Brevis (thenar eminence)
  •         Flexor Pollicis Brevis (thenar eminence)
  •         Adductor Pollicis

Muscles Intermediate to them are :

  •         Lumbrical Muscles
  •         Dorsal Interossei
  •         Palmar Interossei

BLOOD SUPPLY :

Muscles of the arm are supplied by the Axillary and Brachial Artery. Those of the Forearm and Hand are supplied by the two terminal branches of the Brachial Artery i.e. Ulnar Artery and Radial Artery.

NERVE SUPPLY :

Muscles of the Arm and Hand are supplied by the branches from Brachial Plexus.
