Peroneus Longus Muscle
ANATOMICAL LOCATION
After arising from fibula, it passes inferior to the fibular trochlea on the calcaneus and then enters the groove into the anterior and inferior groove on cuboid bone. It crosses the sole, running obliquely till it attaches 1st metatarsal.
SHAPE
It is a narrow, thin and long muscle.
ORIGIN AND INSERTION
Peroneus longus arises from the head and upper two thirds of lateral surface of fibula and gets inserted to the medial cuneiform and base of first metatarsal.
NERVE SUPPLY
It is innervated by the superficial fibular nerve (L5, S1, and S2).
BLOOD SUPPLY
The peroneus longus receives its blood supply from the perforating branches of fibular artery.
FUNCTIONS
This muscle has important role in foot movements. It causes the eversion of foot along with weak Plantar Flexion of ankle. When we stand on one foot, peroneus longus helps to steady our leg on one foot.
