Serratus Anterior Muscle


STRUCTURE AND POSITION :

ATTACHMENTS :

Serratus Anterior Muscle has a number of origins and a common insertion.

  •         Origin : Serratus Anterior Muscle arises from first 8 or 9 Ribs. It arises over the Anterolateral surface of the Ribs just anterior to the Mid Axillary Line.
  •         It runs laterally and backwards and superiorly. Its direction is oblique.
  •         Insertion : Serratus Anterior Muscle is inserted into the Scapula over its anterior surface of the Medial Margin.

BLOOD SUPPLY :

Serratus Anterior Muscle receives blood from Superior Thoracic Artery, Lateral Thoracic Artery and Thoracodorsal Artery.

NERVE SUPPLY :

Serratus Anterior Muscle is innervated by the Long Thoracic Nerve.

ACTION :

Serratus Anterior Muscle rotates the Glenoid Cavity of the Arm upwards which is necessary for the complete lifting of the arm.

It also abducts the Scapula.
