Thymus

The main function of the thymus is to promote the development of T-lymphocytes (T cells), which are a type of white blood cell of the adaptive immune system.

Each T cell attacks a foreign substance which it identifies with its receptor. They have a role in the immune system to protect the body from viruses, and other types of infections. They also protect the body from itself by controlling cancerous cells.

The thymus consists of three types of cells: epithelial cells, lymphocytes, and Kulchitsky cells, or neuroendocrine cells.

Beside the regulation the immune system through the development of immune cells, the thymus also produces hormones that promote growth and maturation.
